Mosaics, July 25

July 25, 2011
In these past weeks we have evolved our regular mosaic pieces from using regular paper, to clay tiles and finally glass tiles. But materials aren’t the only things that we have evolved. we have changed our 2D designs on canvas to 3D designs on pots, vases and lamps. Our creations are coming out so well that we have people wanting to buy our work before its even finished! including the lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars!!!!!!!!!!
I am extremely disappointed that it is our final week of work this summer 😦 but i am extremely grateful to have had this experience and pleasure to work with everyone and hopefully next year to be able to do it again!

Vocal, July 13

July 22, 2011

This past week we have been preparing a song for our opportunity to be on Fox 8 News with Kenny Crumpton. We ended up singing the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. This was a very unique and exciting experience that we were all fortunate enough to participate in.

In the next couple weeks, the Vocal Co-op will be preparing for our final showcase. To prepare we will be learning, staging or choreographing, and rehearsing many new songs. Included in these songs are Disney, Broadway, and popular older and modern-day songs. We have and will cover a large variety of genres of songs including R&B, Jazz, Gospel, Showtunes, and Classical.

Throughout the past weeks I have been very pleased with the work we have been doing and am very excited for the upcoming weeks. The Vocal Co-op will have a few ‘outings’ within the next couple weeks to places such as the Star Plaza where we will perform for the public. I am looking forward to all of these opportunities as well as simply attending work and learning everything that our MTA has to offer us!

This week in painting co-op we are going to be on Fox 8 News. Also we are starting our Pointillism paintings for our new projects.  We are going to walk down to the Rock Hall to do sketches of the city for inspiration for our Cleveland project.  Painting co-op is running very smoothly.

Architecture, July 12

July 22, 2011

Last week the architecture co-op separated into 2 groups to begin working on our entries for the Cleveland Design Competition for the Campus International School, to be designed for grades K-12 on the Cleveland State Campus. We were given some restrictions of a site, and specific square foot measurements for spaces needed, but the only other main instruction was to design a school like you have never seen before.

We each made some drawing of what our dream school would look like, then combined our best ideas and features to create a few floor plans and elevation drawings for our design entry. Finally, we collaborated with the photography co-op to photograph our Strangeville house models.

We look forward to continuing the school design project, building a set for the Film co-op, and building rain barrels next week.

Pastry, July 5

July 22, 2011

Dear ArtWorks,

This week the Pastry Co-op worked on cheesecakes for the Potluck and a dessert buffet for the Open House. We made three types of cheesecake; Oreo, strawberry, and caramel. Unfortunately, the caramel cheesecake had blue stuff in it the day of the Potluck. So, we were all kind of disappointed about that. However, we got many compliments on the other two flavors.

The day of the Potluck the Pastry and Culinary Arts Co-ops were able to visit Chef Steve’s Job. We were able to go on a tour of the kitchen. We were also able to ask our tour guide all types of questions we wanted to know the answer to. Going on the tour we were able to get a small glimpse of college life.

Our Co-op enjoyed the college panel. Us being able to ask them questions really helped us with a college insight. We also enjoyed the Potluck and Talent Show. Seeing the Apprentice’s talents was really fun.

Next week we will be working on the dessert buffet for the Open House. We’re all a little bit nervous on how it will turn out. Thursday we worked on tart shells almost all day and still didn’t get half way done with them. We’ll be finishing them next week and working on our other desserts. We are all very excited about showing our families and everyone else what we’ve been working on and what we can do.

Sincerely,
The Pastry Co-Op

Throughout our artistic journey we have explored many different aspects of what it means to be a vocal singer. The most exciting activity that we have done so far would be performing at the Cleveland Arts Prize. I felt so amazed and honored to be in the presence of such distinguished artists in Cleveland.  Singing at the Cleveland Arts Prize was a great moment and I will cherish it forever.

Photography, July 5

July 22, 2011

We started off last week at the Tri-C Metro Campus. There we were given our Holga cameras which are a relatively inexpensive film camera. We shot some pictures on campus before our campus tour.

On Tuesday we spent the day around Wade Oval. We viewed the “Two Views” landscape photography exhibition at the museum and then we continued to shoot more photographs around the area.

Wednesday and Thursday were regular work days in which we developed and processed our film from the previous two days.

Friday was our talent show and pot luck full of amazing talent and fantastic food.

This upcoming week we plan to work on our Fenceperation project as well as prepare for our Open House on Thursday.

Architecture, July 4

July 22, 2011

Last week provided a much-needed change of pace and atmosphere for the architecture co-op.

On Monday, we spent the day at the Tri-C campus where we met and spoke with Marc Manack of Robert Maschke Architects, the firm that designed the award-winning Media Room at Tri-C Metro. He talked to us about the firm that he works for and gave us some advice about architecture school and finding a job as an architect.

We spent Tuesday at Wade Oval where we got a tour of the Peter B. Lewis Building, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. We checked out the Cleveland Museum of Art, and attended the Cleveland Arts Prize. It was really cool to see Robert Maschke, the owner of the firm who designed the media room we saw the day before, win a mid-career Arts Prize.

We spent the rest of the week finishing and photographing our chipboard models of homes.

We ended the week with the ArtWorks 4th of July potluck and talent show, where one of our co-op members, Justin Hobbs, showed off his super awesome electric guitar skills!!
